Principal’s Message:
It’s now the beginning of May and we are entering the final part of the school year. Time sure does fly by! It seems that it was only yesterday when we were welcoming students back for the beginning of the 2011 – 2012 school year. As you can see by the “Important Dates to Remember” section, the last two months of school are going to be very busy ones. I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite all of our Dickson families to our “Celebration of Learning” which takes place on Thursday, May 17 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. At this time, you will be able to visit your child’s classroom to look at examples of the excellent
work that is being done at your school each and everyday. At this time, our School Council will be hosting a BBQ where you can purchase a delicious barbequed hamburger or hot dog and a drink. Whether you choose to have dinner at the school or not, we would love to as many of our families at the school on this evening. On behalf of the staff of Dickson, I would like to thank the community for their support throughout the school year and we look forward to your continued support in the future.
Lost and Found
Over the winter months, many articles of clothing have been placed in our lost and found bin. The next time you visit the school, please take a moment to take a look to see if any of your child’s belongings are located here. Unclaimed articles will be forwarded to charity.
Moving? If your family is planning to move over the summer, please notify the office. This will help us in our planning for the next school year.
Attendance Check
Please remember to call the school in the event that your child is going to be absent from school. You can call 24 hours a day as our answering machine is always ready to accept your call.
May is Speech and Hearing Month!
Speech-Language Pathologists assess and treat children and adults with hearing and communication disorders. Early detection of speech, hearing and language problems is often the key to successful treatment. Pay close attention to the way your child responds to questions and uses language. The first few years of a child’s life are particularly critical for speech and language development. Watch for the warning signs in school-aged children such as the inability to speak in complete sentences and follow spoken directions, difficulty in telling and understanding stories; stuttering, or getting stuck on certain words or sounds; difficulty playing or communicating with friends; having frequent or long-term hoarseness; inappropriate control over speech volume; a history of chronic ear infections. (Source:
Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, www.caslpa.ca) If you are concerned about your child’s communication, you can access a Speech-Language Pathologist in the following ways: For children of senior kindergarten entry age, contact KidsAbility at 519-866-8886 (free assessment and treatment) and for those students currently in senior kindergarten or later grades, discuss your concerns with your child’s teacher, or search for a private therapist (College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists of Ontario. www.caslpo.com “Find a Private Practioner”).
Morning Supervision
Parents please remember that morning supervision on the playground begins at 8:40 a.m. To ensure for the safety of our students, parents are reminded that students should not arrive prior to this time.
Creative Playground
Parents and caregivers are reminded that our Creative Playground is closed at the end of the day. Although we do have supervision on the school yard at this time, the priority for the teacher on duty is to ensure that all students have been picked up and that students have left the playground safely. Students who wish to use the Creative Playground at the end of the day must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian or caregiver. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.
Pennies for Cancer!
Throughout the last two weeks of April we Have been collecting pennies to donate to KOOL FM on behalf of the Grand River Cancer Unit. We have collected over 30,000 pennies!!!!! Thanks goes out to our community! We showed again that we are truly “The Little School that Cares”.
Accommodation Review
As many of you are aware, we have been part of a review process that looks at boundaries, school closings, and new builds. The process is nearly complete, with the final recommendations to be presented at the next public meeting to be scheduled in May. For further information on the review and the potential outcomes, please contact Dianne Ray at stichedright@msn.com
Parking Lot
Once again, we wish to remind parents who are leaving the school property with students via Cant Ave. to please do so by walking behind the school (playground side). Another friendly reminder that the parking lot is for staff only, due to our limited space. Your support and cooperation is greatly appreciated.
Bag to School Fundraiser
Once again this year, our School Council will be sponsoring the Bag to School Fundraiser. You can help support Council by donating used clothing, soft toys, shoes (please tie them together) belts, and purses. Drop off is Thursday May 17th at our open house. Bag to School will come to the school to pick up the donated items the next day. Thank you for you support!
School Dress Code
As we head into Spring, it is necessary to review our school dress code with the community. School is a student’s place of work. Students should be appropriately dressed at all times and should refrain from wearing the following to school: • clothing with inappropriate sayings or pictures; • shorts / dresses / skirts that are too short; • clothing that permits undergarments, bare mid-driffs to show or are see through (sheer or fishnet); • foot wear that can easily fall off (e.g., flip flops) as this creates a safety issue (certain activities will not be permitted if this type of footwear is worn to school).
